Chronic Venous Insufficiency
In circumstances where the reflux of blood in the leg is particularly severe and ongoing, the pressure of blood around the ankle becomes injurious to the skin and other structures around the lower part of the leg. This leads to chronic changes in the skin, associated debilitating swelling, and in later stages the development of a chronic sore or ulcer which can be exquisitely painful. While this circumstance is often difficult to treat, as long as the underlying cause of the reflux of blood in the leg can be identified and treated safely, significant relief can be obtained in people with chronic venous disease, often resulting in a cure.
