What Does Early Stage Chronic Venous Insufficiency Look Like?

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which the valves of the vein don’t function properly, causing blood to pool in the lower legs. If left untreated, chronic venous insufficiency can lead to painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms, so it’s important to be aware of the signs with early stage chronic venous insufficiency.

In the early stages of the condition, you may notice spider veins, which are tiny, web-like visible veins that are often genetic. From here, you may see varicose veins, which are large, protruding veins that you can see and feel on the surface of the skin. Noticing these early signs of chronic venous insufficiency can help you get diagnosed more quickly and get informed on minimally invasive treatment options that can offer relief.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency Symptoms & Risks

Chronic venous insufficiency symptoms can vary based on the stage and progression of the disease. Symptoms may include:

  • Spider veins
  • Varicose veins
  • Leg swelling
  • Skin discoloration
  • Venous stasis ulcer

When venous disease worsens, it can lead to multiple complications, which can include:

  • Phlebitis, which is when a blood clot forms in a vein due to inflammation. On the surface of the vein, it is called superficial phlebitis.
  • Deep vein thrombosis, which is when a blood clot affects a deeper vein.

Blood clots can lead to life-threatening complications, so it’s important to get any symptoms examined and treated.

Treating Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Aesthetic Vascular Associates offers several treatment options, and the right one for you will depend on the severity and stage of your chronic venous disorder.

Compression Stockings
Compression stockings are often the first line of treatment for venous diseases. They work by compressing the leg and forcing blood back to the upper legs. This helps to prevent blood from pooling, causing swelling and more.

Injection Sclerotherapy
We often see varicose veins and spider veins in the early stages of chronic venous disease. These veins can be treated with injection sclerotherapy, a procedure that uses a tiny needle to inject liquid into multiple parts of the vein, effectively shutting it down. Patients appreciate the minimally invasive nature of this treatment with no downtime.

Foam Sclerotherapy
Foam sclerotherapy treats large varicose veins that may occur in the progressing stages of venous disease. We use Varithena, an FDA approved foam sclerosant, for which microfoam is injected into the vein to naturally seal it closed.

Vein Ablation
Vein ablation is a procedure that uses microwave energy to heat the vein wall and shut down the vein. We perform both radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation, which take 30-40 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis.

Microphlebectomy
We use microphlebectomy in conjunction with vein ablation to prevent the progression of vein disease and chronic venous insufficiency. The procedure is outpatient and results in little to no downtime.
